From the supplier: The FDA's approval of food irradiation is expected to elicit a negative reaction from consumers owing to public concern that irradiated foods pose health risks and affect flavor and nutritional value. The agency has allowed the irradiation of beef, lamb and pork to kill harmful microorganisms, a process practiced in more than 35 countries and approved by the World Health Organization in early 1997. The American Frozen Food Institute, meanwhile, has expressed support for the FDA move, saying that it is a step toward food safety.
